Peter Burling and Blair Tuke

Pinnacle achievement: 2016 Rio Olympic 49er GOLD MEDALISTS

Won the Olympics 49er Sailing with a 43 point winning margin - the biggest winning margin of any Olympic sailing event since the modern scoring system was introduced in 1968

  • Score of 35 points across 13 races – an astonishing 43 points ahead of second place
  • Led around every mark of the medal race
  • At 25 years old, Pete is the youngest 49er helmsman ever to win Gold. (Blair is 27)
  • NZ flagbearers at the Olympic Opening ceremony – (also becoming only the 4th flagbearers in NZ Olympic history to win a gold medal at the same Olympics)
  • Respect from their competitors – e.g. this quote from a Danish sailor about the Olympics “They are also the nicest and fairest people! In race one, when DEN was way ahead and went in the wrong direction, NZL shouted and screamed from their second position to make DEN realize that they were going in the wrong direction. This even though NZL knew that DEN would be a gold contender. Respect!”

Won every major 49er regatta since the London Olympics

  • In the nomination period (2016)  – 49er wins include
  1. 49er Sailing Olympic Gold  (Rio)
  2. 49er World Champion Feb 16, Clearwater USA – 68 boats from 26 countries
  3. 49er European Championships  (Barcelona , Apr 16)
  4. 2016 World Cup Hyeres (France)
  5. 2016 Kieler Woche (Germany)

Peter and Blair have been undefeated in major 49er regattas since London 2012 - winning 28 regattas. In the 49er class this has never been done even for a 12 month period. In this modern sailing era it is believed that there has never been any Olympic class so dominated by a single boat for a whole Olympic quad (Pete and Blair finished 3rd in a short 6-race training regatta in July 2016 but won all other regattas they had competed in during the 4 year period).

  • Peter and Blair have won 149 individual 49er races in regattas since London 2012
  • They have won 4 consecutive World and European titles in the past 4 years. (49er Worlds typically have around 70 -80 boats from around 26 -31 countries)
  • Over the past 2 years they have won their major regattas (Olympics, Worlds, Europeans and World cup regattas) by a massive average of 38 points

Leadership

  • NZL Olympic Flagbearers and team captains
  • Only the 4th ever NZ flagbearers to win Gold at the same Olympics (Jack Lovelock 1936, Peter Snell 1964, Ian Ferguson 1988)
  • Led NZs most successful Olympic team ever
  • Leadership role in the Sailing team – winning 4 medals overall- equalling the best ever performance by a NZL sailing team at the Olympics
