Niki is passionate about food, healthy eating, nutrition, food culture, marketing and policy. As founding editor (now editor-at-large) of Healthy Food Guide magazine, a columnist for the Herald on Sunday and a frequent contributor to radio and television, she has extensive knowledge of modern media and consumer attitudes and headspace when it comes to healthy eating.
With her inspiring philosophy, “carrots and cupcakes”, Niki loves busting myths about health and food, spreading common sense and offering practical tips on how to be healthy and vibrant for life. Niki can talk about everything you need to know about healthy eating; how to live to be 100; how social media is making you unhealthy and why you should never go on another diet, among other things.
Niki has been involved in the food media for nearly 20 years. She founded the website for Cuisine magazine, was that title's first web editor and a contributor to the print title. She is currently president of Foodwriters New Zealand, the professional body for food communicators. She is a proud ambassador for the Garden to Table programme which helps kids learn how to grow, cook and share food. She is a member of the Council of Directors for the True Health Initiative, a global coalition of health professionals dedicated to sharing a science-based message of what we know for sure about lifestyle and health.
Niki has had some other interesting career interludes, including working on international yachting campaigns (Americas Cup) and writing about cars.
She has won several awards, including Supreme Editor of the Year in 2009 at the NZ Magazine Awards.
As well as being an avid eater, Niki loves ethical and vintage fashion and has recently revived her interest in the long-lost skill of sewing. One of her creations can be seen in her TEDx talk here .
